Operational and Award Winning Inspiration in Dublin
Insight Research will host an operations focused best practice store safari in Dublin from 13-15 November, featuring the winner and many of the finalists for the NACS International Retailer of the Year 2018
Ireland is acknowledged as a global leader in convenience and fuels retail and is home to some of the most celebrated international industry operators, including the 2018 NACS International Convenience Retailer of the Year Fresh – The Good Food Market.
Globally, in a huge transition, many convenience retailers have built new convenience store formats focused on food. But competition for the consumer on the move is hotting up and the industry is still struggling to create a reputation for freshness, quality and operational excellence as strong as that enjoyed by businesses like Pret a Manger.
Our Dublin safari will explore how Irish retailers and entrepreneurs have managed to make a huge leap forward in this respect, through a variety of innovative and inventive strategies in both city centre and roadside locations. Confirmed hosts include award winning retailers Fresh – the Good Food Market, Applegreen, Maxol, Musgrave Centra, Circle K and SPAR Ireland (BWG).
Fresh – The Good Food Market
Fresh operates as an upscale, urban grocery store which also offers a mix of freshly prepared food to go, food for later, in-store casual dining; ultimately carving a new niche for itself in the sector. The business has managed to redefine the very concept of a convenience store to appeal to its customers who range from busy professionals and city centre workers to college students, trendy socialites and lifestyle bloggers.
By revitalising the hot food category, Fresh has created a genuine destination for hot food that incorporates all day parts, from breakfast, lunch and dinner. On-site kitchens and in-store chefs are the centre-piece of Fresh stores. Completely transparent views into the kitchen area mean customers can watch the team prepare and cook everything from scratch. It also enables stores to be creative in terms of the offering. Almost operating like a restaurant, the Fresh team creates new dishes of the day such as chilli, stews and freshly made pizza, pushing the boundaries of a typical ‘convenience store’.

Visits to Applegreen, Maxol, Musgrave Centra and other innovators
Applegreen now operates in the UK and the US in addition to its core Ireland base. Long time Irish innovation champion and two time NACS International Convenience Retailer of the Year, Applegreen’s latest sites set new standards in site design, new technologies and enhanced food ranges.
Technology is used to improve operational efficiency in food. Digital screens showcase its own brand food offering, The Bakewell, with new digital menu screens showing tailored offers throughout the day. The screens also enable Applegreen to monitor footfall and demographics throughout the day.
Applegreen’s new Store Management System (SMS) has also improved the speed of service and reduces the average handling time for the customer. The system also facilitates points collection for the retailer’s rewards customers, which they can then redeem against a range of offers; and allows the store to personalize any future communication with customers.
Maxol’s pace of innovation over recent years has been second to none and has been Highly Commended in NACS international awards. Latests sites features Maxol’s largest range of leading food franchises with O’Briens, The Bagel Factory, Abrakebabra, Freshly Chopped, and Insomnia; for eating in-store, on the go or for take home consumption and providing a wide range of freshly prepared food across all dayparts.
The Maxol branded ‘food court’ offer is provided and operated by the leading foodservice operations expert, Aramark. It has combined the best of Irish and international food concepts at the site, drawing inspiration from high streets in North America, the UK and Ireland.
Former NACS International retailer of the year Musgrave Centra has recently repositioned its format to remain relevant to customers. The new format and offer has three main objectives: to step change the consumer view of Centra in Dublin, to attract new customers and to deliver profitable sales. It is highly impressive in all areas.
The vision for Centra in the Central Dublin locations we will be visiting is to be a destination for great coffee, have a fresh and healthy food offer, plus a sit down area to maximise the premium shopper spend.
In particular, Centra has delivered a best in class offering with the highly accomplished ‘Frank & Honest’ Cafe brand providing a bean to cup and barista coffee offer plus premium accompaniments. Centra’s Kitchen, meanwhile, celebrates food with new ranges, freshly made in-store; day part solutions and qualified and knowledgeable staff. New fresh and tasty food ranges are freshly prepared each morning including salads, juices, snacks and breakfast options with ‘live well’ healthier fresh and ambient options incorporated across the store.
